Mid-19th century English frog mug in the classic pearlware tradition, decorated in black transfer with hand-applied enamel highlights typical of the 1840s–50s. The pastoral scene wraps the body with naïve charm, framed by delicate border work and double handles that give the form both balance and presence.
And then, of course, the surprise: a molded frog resting at the base, revealed only as the drink disappears. Originally intended as a bit of tavern humor, these mugs have become enduring collector favorites for their whimsy and craftsmanship alike.
Large in scale at a full pint, and unmarked as expected for the period, it carries the honest wear and subtle crazing that confirm its age. Equal parts functional history and conversation piece — exactly the kind of object that feels at home in a thoughtfully layered interior.
